Porcelain Doll (Poem)

Porcelain Doll

There is a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
Her cheeks are rosy and firm,
Her eyes are sweet and endearing.
She has a tomboy dress
And a killer smile.

There is a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
She’s surrounded by lead horses
And soldiers in merry-go-rounds.
Around it sugar candy
And cotton apples.

There is a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
I hadn’t seen anything quite like it.
Never before.
It made my lips smile
With the curve of her ruby mouth.
It made my chest slowly beat
With the grin of her silk figurine.

There is a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
With one swift stroke,
I slammed her to the floor
I don’t know why I did that.
I guess, I guess. . .

There was a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
Now her pieces are all scattered
in my bedroom floor.
I don’t know why I did that.
I guess, I guess. . .

There was a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
There was a porcelain doll
On the lonely shelf by the wall.
I guess, I guess...
She was only a doll,
A doll and nothing more.
